Unfinished Business — thoughts pulled from research I never got to finish, and project work I keep thinking about anyway.

Nobody Reads the Morning Paper Anymore. So What Are We Actually Reading? I once tried to write a proposal narrowly focused on journalism students, how mobile phones were reshaping the way they consume news. Good topic, but honestly, the moment I started researching it, I realized the story was bigger than one classroom. It's not really about journalism students. It's about all of us, and what happens to news the moment it stops being something you sit down for and becomes something that just... arrives. As a comms person, this is the stuff I think about constantly, not just "is the audience on mobile" (obviously, yes), but what mobile actually does to how people relate to information once it gets there. News stopped being an event and became a background noise There used to be a shape to how people consumed news, the morning paper, the evening bulletin, appointments you kept with information. Mobile broke that shape entirely. Now people "snack" on news, ...

Can a text message change what a farmer plants?

Image
This is a question I keep coming back to as a comms person who's spent time around agricultural development work. Not "can we push out more messages," but something narrower and harder: can the right message, on the right channel, actually move someone from "I've heard of this improved seed" to "I bought it and planted it"? I got deep into this a while back while working on a research project , and it's stayed relevant to how I think about comms work in development generally, because seed adoption is really just a communication and behavior-change problem wearing an agricultural costume. The problem isn't that improved seeds don't exist Tanzania has improved varieties of beans, groundnuts, sorghum, seeds bred to yield more, resist disease, handle drought better. The problem is that a lot of young agripreneurs either don't know these seeds exist, don't trust them, or can't find a reliable source. Traditional extension serv...

Do You, Be You

There was a time when I thought self love, self worth and self care was only based on wearing nice clothes and outfits, having a sleek haircut, wearing expensive cologne or maybe believing that being liked by everybody and getting their approval was the real deal, but as time went by, I realized it was more than that. It starts with you. It involves a few vital necessities for instance mental health, self esteem, emotional stability etc. One thing is certain, you will never be liked by everybody, so why bother? The love and worth you are seeking from the society should start with you. The moment you discover your self worth, you lose interest in anyone who doesn't see it. Society can be a pain sometimes. Half of them will tell you that this is right, the other half will disagree. Do this! do that! wear this! wear that! You can never satisfy society.  The moment you realize this, you will know the importance and the need to do and be you.  Self worth is a value that you set on ...

Live a little

"Live a little". A few words with substantial meaning. We tend to forget to live, we end up only surviving. Talking on experience, I always thought living was staying in, on my phone scrolling on Instagram, liking and commenting on other people's lives. Don't get me wrong, i'm not bashing anyone who does that, but I came to realize that life's more than that. I wasted a lot of my time without realizing. Lost my time comparing myself with the different personalities I came across on social media, I ended up being jealous, depressed and ungrateful. It gave me temporary happiness but long term depression. I wanted the lives of the few people I saw on media platforms, the want intensified. I randomly got angry at myself, seeing my age groups succeeding before me. Seeing random people buying their parents houses, cars, taking them to luxury islands for the holidays. I became a bitter man. If only I had realized how lucky I was. I had every reason to be grateful, bu...
